 Perform wudu (ablution) before making dua. Turn your face towards Kaaba and lift your hands during dua. Express thanks for blessings you received. Repent for your past sins and mistakes.

"According to Umar bin Al-Khattab [may Allah be pleased with him], the Prophet's practice lift his hands in prayer and not put them down until he had gently wiped his face with them, showing humility and devotion." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 3386)
