Prayers for Anxiety

Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? Do you struggle to find peace and calm in uncertainty? You're not alone. Anxiety is a common struggle that many of us face, but there is hope. Prayer can be a powerful tool to help manage anxiety and find peace.
In Islam, anxiety is seen as a natural human emotion, but one that can be overcome through faith and prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to seek refuge in Allah from anxiety and sorrow.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "For those who are distressed, the suggested supplication is: 'O Allah, I seek Your mercy.'" Do not leave me to my own devices even for an instant, but arrange all my affairs for me in the best way. There is no god but You.'" (Sunan Abi Dawood, 5090)

"Truly, with every difficulty comes relief. Yes, with every difficulty comes relief." (Quran 94:5-6)

How to Overcome Anxiety and Depression

When we're struggling with anxiety and depression, it can feel like the darkness will never lift. But there is hope. Prayer can help us overcome these struggles by connecting us with a higher power, providing comfort and guidance, and reminding us that we're not alone.
In Islam, we are encouraged to seek help from Allah, the Most Merciful, through prayer, recitation of the Quran, and remembrance of His name. We are also taught to take care of our physical and mental health and to seek support from loved ones and the community.

The Messenger of Allah said: "If someone wants Allah to answer their prayers during times of difficulty and sorrow, they should supplicate abundantly when they are at ease." (Jami`at-Tirmidhi, 3382)

As narrated by Asma' daughter of Umays: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: "Shall I teach you some words to say in times of distress? They are: 'Allah, Allah is my Lord, I do not associate anything with Him.'" (Sunan Abi Dawood, 1525)

What is Prayer for Anxiety?

Prayer for anxiety is a way to express our feelings, concerns, and fears to a higher power. It's a way to surrender our worries and ask for guidance, comfort, and peace. Prayer can help us shift our focus from our anxiety to the present moment, and remind us that we're not alone. In Islam, prayer (du'a) is a powerful means of connecting with Allah and seeking His help in times of need. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to pray for guidance, strength, and protection from anxiety and sorrow.
"My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the whispers of Satan. And I seek refuge in You, my Lord, from their presence near me." (Quran 41:36)

Here are some prayers:
-Anas bin Malik reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) would say, "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, from being burdened by debt, and from being overpowered by others." (Al-Bukhari, 6369)
-The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever says in the evening: 'I am satisfied with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad (ﷺ) as my Prophet (Raḍītu billāhi rabban wabil-Islāmi dīnan wa bi-Muḥammadin nabiyyan),' it becomes incumbent upon Allah to make him pleased." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, 3389)

Prayers for Sleep

Do you struggle with insomnia or restlessness at night? Prayer can help. In Islam, sleep is seen as a blessing from Allah, and we are encouraged to pray before bed, thanking Allah for the blessings of the day and seeking protection from harm. Here are some prayers for sleep:

Sulaiman bin Buraidah reported that his father said:

Khalid bin Al-Walid al-Makhzumi complained to the Prophet (ﷺ) about his insomnia, saying: "O Messenger of Allah, I cannot sleep at night." The Prophet (ﷺ) advised him: "When you go to bed, recite: 'O Allah, Lord of the Seven Heavens and all that they shade, Lord of the earths and all that they support, Lord of the devils and those they mislead, be my protector from the evil of Your creation as a whole. May none of them harm or oppress me. Mighty is the one who seeks refuge in You, praised is Your glory, and there is no deity but You.' (Allāhumma rabbas-samāwātis-sabi wa mā aẓallat, wa rabbal-arḍīna wa mā aqallat, wa rabbash-shayāṭīni wa mā aḍallat, kun lī jāran min sharri khalqika kullihim jamīan an yafruṭa alayya aḥadun minhum, aw an yabghiya alayya, `azza jāruka wa jalla thanā’uka, wa lā ilāha ghairuka wa lā ilāha illā anta)." (Tirmidhi, 3523)

Aisha narrated that each night before going to bed, the Prophet (ﷺ) would place his hands together, blow into them, and recite: “Say: He is Allah, the One,” “Say: He is Allah, the Lord of Al-Falaq,” and “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.” He would then wipe his hands over as much of his body as he could reach, repeating this process three times. (Tirmidhi, 3402)

Hudhaifah bin Al-Yaman (ra) narrated that when the Prophet (ﷺ) went to sleep, he would place his hand under his head and recite: “O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You gather [Your servants]” (Allāhumma qinī adhābaka yawma tajmau [ibādak]) or “on the Day You resurrect Your servants” (tabathu ibādak).” (Jami at-Tirmidhi, 3398)

Al-Bara' bin `Azib (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would rest his head on his right hand when going to sleep and then say: “My Lord, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.” (Tirmidhi, 3399)

Couple Bedtime Prayer

In Islam, marriage is a sacred institution, and husbands and wives are encouraged to pray together, seeking Allah's protection and blessings on their relationship.
Here's a prayer that couples can say together before bed:

Ibn `Abbas narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When you are about to have sexual intercourse with your wife, say: 'Bismillah, Allahumma jannibna-sh-shaitan, wa jannibi-sh-shaitan ma razaqtana.' If a child is conceived from this union, Satan will not be able to harm that child." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 6388)

"Our Lord, bless us with spouses and offspring who bring joy to our hearts, and make us examples for the righteous." (Quran 25:74)

Prayer for Fear

When fear creeps in, prayer can help calm our hearts and minds. In Islam, fear (khawf) is seen as a natural human emotion, but one that can be overcome through faith and prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us to seek refuge in Allah from fear and sorrow. Here are some prayers:
The Prophet (ﷺ) would call upon Allah during times of distress, saying, "There is no deity except Allah, the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the heavens and the earth, and Lord of the majestic Throne." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, 6345)
