What is an Example of Tawakkul?

Imagine a farmer who plants seeds and takes care of his crops by watering them, protecting them from pests, and ensuring they get enough sunlight. Despite his best efforts, the outcome of his crops – whether they thrive or fail – is ultimately in Allah’s hands. The farmer’s Tawakkul is demonstrated by his diligent work combined with his trust in Allah to provide the best outcome.

Another example can be seen in the story of Prophet Musa(A.S). When he was pursued by Pharaoh’s army and faced the Red Sea, he did not panic. Instead, he trusted on Allah’s plan. Allah instructed him to strike the sea with his staff, and it parted, allowing the Israelites to escape. This story exemplifies Tawakkul—making an effort and then relying on Allah for the outcome.

What Does the Quran Say About Tawakkul?

The Quran emphasizes the importance of Tawakkul in several verses, encouraging believers to trust in Allah and rely on His wisdom. Here are a few examples:

- Surah Al-Imran (3:159):

“...After making a decision, entrust its outcome to Allah. Surely, Allah favors those who rely on Him."

Surah At-Talaq (65:3) encourages us to place our trust in Allah after making decisions, as He loves those who rely on Him. Allah will provide from unforeseen sources and fulfill the needs of those who have faith in Him.

A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ), "Should I tie my camel and trust in Allah, or leave it untied and trust in Allah?" The Prophet (PBUH) replied, "Tie your camel and then trust in Allah."  (Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2517)

It means take necessary actions and trust Allah for the outcome.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If you rely on Allah as He deserves, He will provide you like birds: they go out hungry and return full." (Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2344; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4164)

It means trust Allah for your needs, and He will provide.

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said, "Whoever puts their trust in Allah, He will suffice them.Allah has set a decree for everything." (Jami' At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3609; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4167)

It means trust Allah, and He will take care of your needs and destiny.

What is Sabr and Tawakkul?

Sabr (patience) and Tawakkul are closely related concepts in Islam. Sabr involves enduring hardships and maintaining steadfastness in the face of trials, while Tawakkul involves trusting Allah’s wisdom and timing. Together, they form a powerful combination:
